A statement by the official spokesman for the armed forces, Colonel Tamer Al-Rifai, and followed by the (INA), said that the operation to hunt down the group’s emir came as a continuation of the efforts of the armed forces to tighten control over areas combating terrorist activity in North and Central Sinai. He added, “The Third Field Army forces raided a number of rugged mountainous areas in central Sinai, and the raid resulted in the elimination of Nasser Abu Zaqul, the emir of the terrorist organization in central Sinai, after an intense exchange of fire. The official spokesman for the Egyptian Armed Forces explained in His statement said that the forces found in his possession an automatic rifle, two hand grenades, and a large amount of ammunition, in addition to six automatic rifle safes and a wireless communication device. He stressed that “the heroes of the Third Field Army are still continuing their efforts to eliminate the takfiri and criminal elements in central Sinai.” On Friday, February 9, the Egyptian army launched “Comprehensive Operation Sinai 2018” to confront terrorism, weeks before the end of a 3-month deadline set by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to secure the Sinai Peninsula, which ends at the end of this February.
