/ Nicaragua announced on Friday that it had submitted a request to the International Court of Justice to participate in the genocide case that South Africa filed against Israel before the court.

The Nicaraguan government stated in a statement that it had “submitted a request to the International Court of Justice to include it in the genocide case brought by South Africa against Israel on the basis of violation of the United Nations Genocide Convention in the Gaza Strip.”

According to the statement, Nicaragua wants to be a party to all possible legal consequences that may arise from the court, and wants to demonstrate its intention to fulfill its obligation to prevent genocide, and to contribute to the punishment of those who committed genocide.

Nicaragua informed the International Court of Justice of its intention to intervene in the course of the entire case as a state if its request is accepted, as Nicaragua believes that Israel’s actions clearly violate the rules of the Genocide Convention, according to the statement.

On January 11, the International Court of Justice began hearings in the case brought by South Africa against Israel for committing the crime of “genocide” in the Gaza Strip.

In an 84-page memorandum, the lawyers urged the judges to order Israel to “immediately suspend its military operations” in Gaza, noting that Israel “has engaged, is engaged, and faces the risk of engaging further in acts of genocide.”
