After last Saturday’s attack by Hamas against Israel, information about the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East is omnipresent in the media and social networks. However, so is misinformation. For this reason, the European Union has asked Elon Musk, executive president of the social network violent« and misinformationon the platform.

This was conveyed by the European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, through a letter to Musk published on the social network itself. “Following the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas against Israel, we have indications that its platform is being used to spread illegal content and disinformation in the EU«says the letter, in which he gives him a 24-hour ultimatum to take concrete measures.

In this sense, Breton alleges that numerous users have spread “manipulated images” and old photographs related to other conflicts, as well as video games, to “spread disinformation” about the war between Israel and the Gaza Strip.

«When you receive notices of illegal content from the EU, you must act quickly, diligently and objectively and remove the content in question when justified,” he highlighted. In this sense, he added that, »given the urgency« of the issue, he hopes that he will be in contact with the »competent authorities« and with Europol.

To this letter from the European Commission, Musk was quick to respond to the commissioner: “Our policy is that everything is open source and transparent, a perspective that I know the EU supports.” Along these lines, he encourages Breton to elaborate a “list of violations” to which it refers, so that the public can see them.

To this response, the commissioner responds: «You are very aware of the complaints of its users -and the authorities- about false content and glorification of violence. It’s up to you to prove that you do what you say,” he responded to Musk in X.

«My team remains at your disposal to guarantee compliance with the Digital Services Act (DSA), which the EU will continue to rigorously enforce,” Breton added. Failure to comply with the DSA can lead to EU fines of up to 6% of a company’s global turnover.
