After five days of fighting the flames, the fire which covered around 1,000 hectares of vegetation in the Pyrénées-Orientales and beyond the Spanish border was extinguished on Thursday April 20 around 5.15 p.m., said departmental firefighters. Under control since Monday, he was still under surveillance due to “little fumaroles”plumes of smoke from the earth that remained but are now extinguished.

Representing the largest fire since the beginning of the year in France, the latter broke out on Sunday morning on the heights of the municipalities of Cerbère and Banyuls-sur-Mer. It then spread rapidly due to its fanning by the Tramontana, the northwest wind blowing at times up to 100 km / h in the reliefs.

In total, some 500 firefighters, supported by six water bomber planes, were mobilized to fight the fire. About 300 people had been evacuated on Sunday before being able to return to their homes within twenty-four hours. There were no casualties or material damage.

On a visit to the site on Monday, the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, pointed out that “The fire season starts early due to global warming”. The department of Pyrénées-Orientales is also affected by a lack of rain “exceptional”according to Météo-France, which is already causing tensions and water restrictions in the department.
