The head of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, called on European countries to spend more on defense, stimulate the European defense industry and increase production. She said this in an interview with the Financial Times, Day.Az reports with reference to Gazeta.ru.

“We have to spend more, we have to spend better, we have to spend in a European way… We have a very fragmented defense market, and that needs to change. What is the remit of the commission? This is industry. This is our core business,” she said.

As the publication notes, EU officials are seeking to maximize military spending by member states since the outbreak of the Ukrainian conflict in order to create a “larger, more reliable and efficient European defense industry.”

At the same time, the newspaper writes that a plan to put Europe’s military-industrial complex in order in the face of “growing threats from Russia” should be published in February.
