The head of the Ministry of Justice of Poland said that Warsaw will not pay fines to the EU

Warsaw will not pay “not a single zloty” from the fines imposed on Poland by the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. This was stated by the head of the Ministry of Justice and the Prosecutor General of the Republic Zbigniew Zöbro.

“The Polish state cannot yield to lawlessness – whether it be illegal sanctions against the Turov mine or fines for changes in the judicial system,” the minister said, quoted by TASS.

As a reminder, on September 20, the court ruled that Poland should pay the European Union 500 thousand euros a day until the Turov coal mine on the border with the Czech Republic is closed. In Prague, they insist that the company is harmful to the environment, and also deprives local farmers of access to water. However, the Poles are not going to stop the work of “Turov”.

Now, another verdict has been added to these sanctions: on Wednesday, the same European Court of Justice ordered Poland to be fined 1 million euros per day until the republic fulfills the requirement to abolish the judicial disciplinary chamber of the Supreme Court. It was created in 2018 as part of a sensational reform of the judicial system and is empowered to make decisions about the work of judges. The European Commission demands to abolish the body. Earlier, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki reported that the republic is, in principle, working on this issue.
