Many make fun of the name of US Ambassador Peter Haas. Especially the leaders of various levels of Awami League and its affiliated organizations have given speeches by combining ‘Hans’ with his name at various times. However, the US ambassador is aware of the fact that the pronunciation of his name is similar to the bird named ‘duck’.
He himself created humor by showing a cartoon made by putting a tie with the logo of the United States on the duck’s neck in conjunction with the leaders’ statements about it.
On Thursday (February 8) afternoon, Peter de Haas put a picture of a duck in his place while sharing his experiences on mistakes and misinformation at the end of the TechCamp workshop organized by the US Embassy for young journalists.
At that time he said, since we can have some fun… If you see a news that says – I’m changing the portrait on my official biography and it looks like this. It’s not Ambassador Duck, it’s Ambassador Haas.
He said that there are at least 10 fake Facebook pages in the name of the US Embassy in Dhaka, a fake X account in his name and a fake Instagram account of the US Embassy.
Peter Haas said, “I often see, people go to meetings with me and I see in the paper the next day, Peter Haas said X-Y-Z and I didn’t say anything like that.” No one fact-checks with us and says ‘did you really say that?’ or ‘What did you say?’ This is a great example. Sometimes it is harmful.
Congratulating the participants, he said, together we can use technology for education, strengthening online security and democracy.
