The Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air has ordered 75 additional copies of the Airbus A321neo, of which it is the largest customer in Europe, the aircraft manufacturer announced on Wednesday August 2.

This firm contract theoretically represents nearly 10 billion dollars, according to Airbus’ latest list price, which has not been updated since 2018.

It brings to 434 the number of A321neo, the largest version of the manufacturer’s star single-aisle aircraft, ordered by Wizz Air, Airbus said in a press release.

75 copies

Wizz Air’s A321neos are equipped with a single-class configuration and some 240 seats, guaranteeing reduced operating costs.

Company CEO Jozsef Varadi, quoted in the statement, hailed “economic efficiency without comparison” et “remarkably low carbon footprint” of these devices.

Wizz Air currently operates 180 Airbus A320 family aircraft, including ” more than half “ in a re-engined neo version, more economical than the previous generation.

Appreciated by low-cost airlines and traditional carriers in its longer-range versions, the A321neo represents more than 60% of orders for the A320 range.

6th European airline

Wizz Air, created 20 years ago, was at the end of July the sixth European company in number of daily flights, behind Air France, but ahead of KLM, according to the Eurocontrol traffic monitoring body.

Engaged in an ambitious race for volumes, it is with its direct competitor Ryanair among the big winners of the post-Covid-19 recovery, with 141% of traffic for the same period of 2019, Ryanair evolving at 127%.
