The American Bloomberg agency, citing people familiar with intelligence information, said on Wednesday that the United States and its allies believe that an Iranian response to the Israeli attack on Tehran’s consulate in Damascus is imminent.
The sources, who requested anonymity while discussing confidential issues, added that the attacks likely to be carried out by Tehran or its agents in the region will target military and government sites in Israel.
The sources confirmed that the possible attack may occur in the coming days using high-precision missiles or drones.
The agency quoted a source as saying that the attack was seen as only a matter of time, according to American and Israeli intelligence assessments.
The sources also said that Israel’s Western allies have been informed that Israeli government and military facilities may be targeted, but civilian facilities are not expected to be targeted.
The sources indicated that American officials are helping Israel plan and exchange intelligence assessments.
The sources said that American and Western intelligence agencies believe that the attack launched by Iran or its agents in the region may not necessarily emanate from northern Israel, where Hezbollah, Tehran’s ally in Lebanon, is present.
The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ali Khamenei, vowed again, on Wednesday, that Israel would “receive punishment” after an air strike attributed to it that resulted in the destruction of the Iranian consulate building in Damascus and the killing of seven members of the Revolutionary Guard, including two senior officers.
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz quickly responded on the X platform, writing in Persian, “If Iran launches an attack from its territory, Israel will respond and attack Iran.”
Last week, Israel announced the strengthening of its defense measures and the temporary suspension of combat unit permissions after Iranian threats.
The raid on the Iranian consulate came in the midst of escalating regional tensions, a war raging in the Gaza Strip against Hamas, and almost daily exchanges of fire with Hezbollah in Lebanon.
