The biggest NATO base in Europe will be built in Romania, it became clear this week. Its area will be more than 10 times larger than the territory of Monaco and about 2 times larger than the area of ”Ramstein” in Germany – the largest and most important US Air Force base on the continent to date, writes dir.bg.

The “Mihail Koglunicanu” air base is 34 kilometers from the Romanian nuclear power plant “Cherna Voda”, 60 kilometers from the Bulgarian border and 130 km from Varna.

Already in 1999, the USA began to use the airport for its needs. In 2003, the Romanian base became one of four Romanian military installations used by the US as a springboard for its invasion of Iraq.

The decision to turn Mihail Koglunicanu into the largest NATO base in Europe dates back to before Russia’s war against Ukraine.

In 2019, the Romanian government approved a project to build a military city and expand the base. According to the adopted plan, “Mihail Koglunicanu” should be able to house a maximum of 10,000 American, allied soldiers and civilians. The total area of the new base will be 28,000 acres, or over 10 times more than the entire territory of Monaco.
