National Health Insurance Corporation, 4 out of 10 patients receive medical treatment in Seoul

At an otolaryngology clinic in Jongno-gu, Seoul, citizens are waiting for their turn to receive treatment.

In 2022, among patients who visited the clinic with cancer, breast cancer patients accounted for the most. By place of residence, the most patients visited hospitals for breast cancer in Seoul, stomach cancer in Gyeongbuk, liver cancer and lung cancer in Jeollanam-do, colon cancer in Gangwon, and uterine cancer in Busan.

According to the ‘2022 Regional Medical Utilization Statistical Yearbook’ released by the National Health Insurance on the 30th, the population covered by medical coverage (health insurance subscribers + medical benefit recipients) at the end of last year was 52.93 million, an increase of 0.01% compared to the previous year. Among these, the number of elderly people aged 65 or older was 9.38 million, an increase of 5.21% (8.91 million) compared to the previous year.

The proportion of population covered by medical insurance over the age of 65 was highest in Jeonnam at 24.8%, followed by Gyeongbuk (23.4%), Jeonbuk (22.9%), Gangwon (22.5%), and Busan (21.3%). Last year, the amount of health insurance premiums was KRW 76.3314 trillion, an increase of 9.7% compared to the previous year (KRW 69.5528 trillion). Among these, workplace insurance premiums accounted for 86.4% at KRW 65.9399 trillion, and regional insurance premiums accounted for 13.6% at KRW 10.3915 trillion.

The average monthly insurance premium paid by employed subscribers was the highest in Seoul at 155,341 won. Sejong followed with 153,288 won, Ulsan with 148,444 won, and Gyeonggi with 138,912 won. The average monthly insurance premium for local subscribers was also highest in Seoul at 118,999 won, followed by Sejong at 108,690 won. It was followed by Gyeonggi (104,218 won) and Incheon (89,618 won).

The medical expenses incurred by health insurance subscribers and medical benefit recipients when they visit hospitals were found to be 116.233 trillion won last year. Here, the medical insurance medical expenses are the medical expenses determined by review out of the total medical expenses charged by the medical institution, and are the sum of the corporation’s contribution borne by the corporation and the out-of-pocket expenses borne by the individual patient.

Considering the patient’s place of residence, the proportion of medical expenses used at medical institutions within each city or province was 91.5% in Daegu, 89.6% in Busan, and 89.5% in Seoul. The lowest region was Sejong (53.1%). Last year, the total number of medical institutions, including pharmacies, was 100,396. The number of doctors (Western and Oriental medicine) was 163,115, and the number of nurses was 254,227. Looking at each city or province, Seoul had the highest number of doctors per 100,000 people covered by medical insurance at 466, followed by Gwangju (376) and Daejeon (367).

The number of patients who visited medical clinics last year was 50.61 million, and among them, Seoul accounted for the largest number of clinics with patients from other regions at 41.7%. In other words, 4 out of 10 patients visiting hospitals in Seoul are residents of other regions.

According to the status of cancer treatment, among the major cancer diseases per 100,000 people covered by medical insurance last year, breast cancer patients were the most common at 469.

Based on the patient’s residence, the region with the largest number of patients receiving breast cancer treatment was Seoul (543 patients), followed by Daejeon and Gyeonggi (480 patients) and Jeonbuk and Busan (469 patients). Gyeongbuk had the highest number of stomach cancer cases with 388 people, and for liver cancer and lung cancer, Jeonnam ranked the highest with 255 and 315 people, respectively. Additionally, Gangwon had the highest number of cases of colon cancer with 402 people, Seoul had the most cases of breast cancer with 543 people, and Busan had the most cases of uterine cancer with 61 people.

The number of patients with high blood pressure was 14,404 per 100,000 people. Comparing by city, county and district, Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do had 28,292 people, followed by Seocheon-gun, South Chungcheong, with 27,939 people, and Danyang-gun, North Chungcheong Province, with 27,517 people. On the other hand, Yeongtong-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do had the lowest number of patients treated for hypertension per 100,000 people in the country at 9,495. This figure is about three times higher in Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do.

The largest number of patients with diabetes were in Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do. The smallest number of patients was also in Yeongtong-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do.

In 2022, the number of diabetes patients per 100,000 people covered by medical insurance is 7,437. When compared by city, county, and district, Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do recorded 14,343 people, while Yeongtong-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do recorded 4,506 people, which is one-third of the number compared to Goheung, Jeollanam-do. .
