On the one hand, there is a shortage of chicks, on the other hand, chicks with a production cost of Tk 28 to Tk 30 have been bought by farmers at double the price of Tk 80 to Tk 90. As a result of the ongoing heat wave that started after Eid, around one lakh chickens are dying every day across the country due to heatstroke. The estimated value of which is 20 crore rupees.

This information has been informed by Bangladesh Poultry Association (BPA).

The BPA has expressed concern that, under these dire conditions, there has been a significant reduction in egg and chicken production (from 4 to 10 percent). If this situation continues, there may be a crisis in the supply of broiler chickens and eggs in the coming days.

According to BPA, more than 1 million broiler, layer and golden chickens have died in the last 10 to 12 days after Eid. Of these, 80 percent were broiler chickens and 10-15 percent were layer chickens. Apart from this, 05 percent of other chickens, including Sonali, died. The amount of loss will be 200 crore rupees. If this situation continues for a few more days, the farms will be closed. Egg and chicken production will decrease.

Taking advantage of this opportunity, corporate egg chicken suppliers and Tejgao egg syndicates will create a shortage of eggs and chickens. From June they will start increasing the prices. From August to October the price of eggs and chicken will increase drastically. The government should protect the poultry farmers in transition from this situation. For example, the government should keep the farmers in production by subsidizing chicks and poultry feed and keep the supply chain in place so that there is no crisis in the market. Marginal farmers can turn around if they are freed from the zombie state of corporate companies and allow the import of chicks and poultry feed from abroad to maintain egg production.

According to BPA’s data from farmers across the country, chicken mortality rate is highest in Narsingdi. In the last 12 days, about 3 lakh, 2 lakh in Mymensingh Gazipur region, 1 lakh 75 thousand in Chittagong region, 50 thousand in Jessore 1 lakh 50 thousand in Sylhet region, 50 thousand in Pabna, 1 lakh in Chuadanga, chickens have died. Corporate Syndicate Tejgaon Egg Syndicate Poultry Syndicate Farmers never get fair price for eggs and chicken. If this situation continues for a few more days, 15 to 20 thousand farms will be closed again.

BPA advises poultry farmers to take several measures to combat heat waves. Recommendations include – ensuring proper ventilation in sheds, keeping less chickens in holding capacity, not using vitamin-based herbal medicine in water, providing midday syrup with lemon and sugarcane molasses, spraying chickens with water, placing wet jute bags on roof of sheds And regular watering, can not feed the chicken at noon.
