The Netherlands plans to ask the EC to freeze payments to Poland from the EU budget

by time news

Acting Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte intends to appeal to the European Commission (EC) with a request to freeze financial assistance in the form of 36 billion euros ($ 42 billion) intended for Poland, due to the fact that the Polish Constitutional Court confirmed the inconsistency of the rule on the superiority of European law over by the provisions of the Constitution of the Republic, Bloomberg reports.

“It is very important to urge the commission not to approve the plan for the restoration of Poland,” Rutte said during a debate in the Dutch parliament. “I will call on the commission next week not to approve the recovery plan, in any case, wait until the issue of which court has priority is decided.”

The European Commission has previously postponed an assessment of Poland’s request. Warsaw claims 23.9 billion euros in grants and 12.1 billion euros in loans at low interest rates, which can be provided from the EU budget, the agency said.

On October 7, the Constitutional Court of Poland confirmed the inconsistency of the rule on the superiority of European law over the provisions of the Constitution of the republic. The European Commission stated that it is using all the tools in order to protect the priority of European norms over the national laws of the EU states. The European People’s Party believes that the Polish government is leading the country to leave the European Union. At the same time, the Polish authorities assure that they do not plan to do this.
