The Gijón City Council held an Urban Planning Commission yesterday with El Molinón and its option to host the 2030 World Cup as one of the issues on the table. After learning of Sporting’s decision to renounce the creation of a new field and adapt to reforming the current Gijón municipal field, without moving the playing field to preserve its age, the socialist group raised what urban planning procedures are now required for the new bet of the Orlegi Group. The response has confirmed the information advanced by LA NUEVA ESPAÑA: the final project will “almost certainly” require the drafting of a special plan whose processing will take “between six months and a year” of urban planning procedures. This will entail reviewing the PGOU, although, regarding this last point, it was detailed that “it cannot be said that it must be modified”, since it will depend on the type of expansion that is made.

One of the big keys to specify is whether Sporting’s project for the new Molinón involves demolishing all its stands and building the new stadium from scratch or taking advantage of part or all of the current construction to adapt it to FIFA requirements. In this sense, there are two routes still being studied and the City Council has explained that it is still too early to specify what Orlegi’s idea is because “right now the government has neither plans nor technical documents.” The last meeting between the City Council and the red-and-white entity only involved a first draft that continues to be developed.

What did come forward during the Urban Planning Commission was the desire to resume the work table for El Molinón’s candidacy for the 2030 World Cup in the coming days with the presence of all municipal groups. A decision that arises after the socialist group made the request. Initially, the working commission also included the Principality.

Sporting continues working on the El Molinón candidacy for Asturias to be present in the 2030 World Cup. The club and the City Council plan to meet again to detail aspects related to the new project, estimated by the red and white club at 150 million euros. Among the main points to be discussed is the need for how the reform will be undertaken, with the City Council being closer to the idea of avoiding tearing down the four stands and working more on improving and modernizing what is already built. The deadlines and the race with the rest of the candidates invite us to try to move forward more quickly in relation to what we have experienced in recent months.

By the end of this month of November, official support from the governments of each organizing country (Spain, Morocco and Portugal) is expected, key to carrying out the World Cup event. From there the debate and fight for the number and choice of venues will begin. Spain wants to host half of the 150 World Cup matches and have between 9 and 11 venues. The wider this margin, the more options the Gijón municipal council will have. The deadline for the final election of the headquarters in Spain is June 2024. El Molinón’s candidacy moves within that limit to reinforce its project and secure a place.
