How many more renewable has an electrical system, cheaper is the electricity it produces. To this comparison the International Energy Agency (IEA) has given it a face and numbers: the renewables installed in Spain between 2021 and 2023 will generate accumulated savings of 10,000 million euros in that period by displacing the market to the generation of fossil fuels, which is more expensive. At the end of the period is when there will be more connected facilities, so that the savings are incremental, so that some 3,000 million euros correspond to the first two yearswhile the The remaining 7,000 million refer to the present year.

The AIE puts the Spanish case only as a examplebut does not shell the expected quantity for the whole of this year installed potency in this country with which you make the calculation. However, and in the absence of what happens in the next six monthsfrom January 2021 to date they have been installed more than 11,000 new megawatts (MW) of clean energyof which 2,600 MW are wind and 9,000 MW solar, according to Red Eléctrica (REE). To understand the magnitude, it has been installed in that period one fifth of the total power of wind and photovoltaic energy in the country (50,000 MW).

In the whole of the European Union, savings amounts to 100,000 million euros between 2021 and 2023. In this case, the agency dependent on the OECD estimates a total installed capacity of 150 gigawatts (GW), of which almost 90 GW correspond to the capacity installed in 2021 and 2022 and the 60 GW correspond to the forecasts for this year. This “acceleration” of wind and solar energy connected to the grid since 2021 has managed to displace some 230 terawatt-hours (TWh) of fossil generation (gas and coal) of the European electricity market, which has helped reduce prices.

Without that growth in renewable capacity, the average wholesale price of electricity in Europe it would have become more expensive by 2% in 2021, 8% in 2022 and 15% this year. Although the agency adds that the savings could have been 15% taller if the ability to wind and solar energy of the European Union would have increased even more rapidly.

War Momentum

The agency, created after the oil crisis of 1973 to coordinate the energy policies of its Member States, affirms that the energy crisis interest in these technologies has skyrocketed, given the extraordinary rise in electricity priceswhich make photovoltaic energy more economically attractive, and due to the political impulse of countries such as Germany, Italy or the Netherlands.

This has led the body based in Paris to increase their growth forecasts for Europe this year and also for the next one by 40% compared to pre-war figures. While globally, the increase shoots up 107 GW to more than 440 GW in 2023, the largest absolute increase in history. And China will account for 55% of that new renewable capacity. The agency plans to close 2024 with a total world capacity of 4,500 GW.

“Energy solar and wind are leading the rapid expansion of the new global energy economy. This year, the world is poised to add an amount record of renewable energy, more than full power capacity of Germany and Spain together“said the executive director of the IEA, Fatih Birol. “But achieving growth stronger means addressing some key challenges. Policies need to be tailored to changing market conditionsand we need to update and extend the electrical networks to ensure that we can make the most of the enormous potential of solar and wind energy,” he adds.
