Since each country sees sunrise at a different time, the system of adjusting time accordingly has been in place since 1884.

Caroline Island is also known for being the first country in the world to witness the sunrise. That way, if someone wants to say Happy New Year from Caroline Island to their relative in Hawaii, they have to wait almost 24 hours. That’s when the New Year is born in Hawaii.
