Clara Sánchez (Guadalajara, 1955) has made her entry into the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) official this Sunday, October 8. During her admission ceremony, the novelist read the speech titled ‘The Time Machine’, to which the writer and academic Soledad Puértolas, who had defended her candidacy along with Carme Riera and Paloma Díaz-Mas, responded. . In his speech, and following the custom of the Docta Casa, Sánchez praised the work of his predecessor, in this case the poet Francisco Brines, who was the owner of the ‘X’ chair until his death in May 2021: «His poetry [la de Brines] It has heat inside. It takes me back to my past in Valencia, to its transparent and taut atmosphere of water and sun. “His childhood strengthens mine.”

The new academic has made a literary and cultural journey that began in mystery (that is the letter ‘X’, according to her) and ended by celebrating the power of imagination and literature: «I end with the phrase that in ‘Micromegas ‘ says a supporter of the philosopher Locke: “I am content to believe that there are more things possible than are thought.”

Clara Sánchez graduated in Hispanic Philology from the Complutense University and dedicated herself to university teaching for seventeen years, but she has also participated as a talk show host, columnist and contributor to various Spanish and foreign media.

As a writer, Clara Sánchez has been translated into more than twenty languages ​​and her work has an important international impact, especially in Italy. Among the awards received throughout her career are the Alfaguara award (‘Latest news from paradise’), the Nadal (‘What your name hides’) or the Planeta (‘The sky has returned’).

In France she was selected for the Prix des Lecteurs for her novel ‘Ce que cache ton nom’. In Italy she has received, among other recognitions, the Rome award for her entire career, the Nazionale Vicenzo Padula and the Baccante.
