The obsession of the Second Republic with destroying the parade of the Three Wise Men

It was Saint Matthew who, back in the 1st century, made reference for the first time to a story as long-standing as it is exciting for the little ones: the arrival of the Three Wise Men in Bethlehem. Although the apostle did not leave written in the chronicles that there were three, nor the gifts that he had brought from the East for the newborn Jesus, he was the precursor of two thousand years of tradition that we still replicate today.

But all this time was not enough for the Second Republic to maintain a practice that they considered linked to the monarchy: the parade of Their Majesties. Thus, in January 1937, Melchior Caspar and Balthazar They were replaced in Valencia by floats full of militiamen, praise for the Government by the smallest and even two large busts, those of Francisco Largo Caballero and Iósif Stalin. That was the reddest parade in the history of Spain. One that was only celebrated once, but that has gone down in history.

Many decades later, the tradition of Their Majesties still survives, although with notable differences from the story that was told in the original texts. Today three kings visit our houses, when traditionally the number was not specified. They also have specific names, although they did not appear in sources until the 9th century. And so on, with up to half a dozen variations. But, beyond the subtle differences, what really matters is that they spread enthusiasm among the little ones in the house. So now you know, enjoy a magical night today.

That is, ‘We are in history’
