The FESPACO is an opportunity for African filmmakers to present their works. Under the spotlight, few people wonder about the pressure of competition experienced by the participants. Eléonore Yaméogo decided to capture these moments through the lens of her camera.

Between Ouagadougou, Niamey, Kigali and Dakar, Eléonore Yaméogo follows four African directors in competition at the Ouagadougou International Film and Television Festival (FESPACO).

For 80 minutes, she tours with these directors, Moumouni Sanou (Burkina Faso), Aicha Micky (Niger), Fama Reyane Sow (Senegal), Mutiganda Wa Nkunda (Rwanda) to understand their participation in FESPACO, their state of mind before, during and after the competition.

FESPACO, an African Cup

Almost in the intimacy of the directors and while following them, in step, throughout the competition, Eléonore Yaméogo presents the emotions felt, the encounters, the fears, the doubts. Among the directors Coulibaly says the Cat, present with his documentary film “Night Nursery”. From Bobo Dioulasso to Ouagadougou, the young man has only one ambition, worthily representing his country Burkina Faso.

He also paraphrases a Malian comrade who says: « FESPACO is the African Cup of Cinema », compared to football. For some, winning the competition is important, for others, already participating in FESPACO is a victory. Over the course of this documentary film, feelings evolve, the importance of competition appears and disappears.

A film to conquer the Golden Stallion

« When I learned that the film was selected, I did not sleep that day “, explains a young Rwandan director. As in all competitions, some have prizes, others do not. But, one thing unites all these actors, the pride of having participated in the biggest festival in Africa.

But, as Gaston Kaboré will say to one of the directors: ” the turtle’s part is not on the tree “. A way of indicating that if something is intended for you, you will necessarily have it.

This documentary film by Eléonore Yaméogo is original in its approach. It shows another life of directors little seized by journalists during FESPACO. It also appears as a tribute to Princess Yennenga. This 80-minute documentary is in competition for this edition of FESPACO which is held from February 25 to March 4, 2023.
