The 40-year-old man, who was being investigated by police, was taken to Somerset Hospital in Cape Town as he needed medical treatment.
When he got there, the man snatched a handgun from a police officer, shot him in the head and opened fire indiscriminately.
In this, 2 patients who were in the hospital succumbed to their injuries while the police officer was critically injured.
