The president has stressed that said pact, which during his administration has been “little by little disarmed”, was a “shameful” agreement where the United Kingdom was allowed to once again have continental flights, from the Malvinas to Sao Paulo (Brazil); and, what was worse, it enabled the exploitation of all the maritime space surrounding the Malvinas” by the British.

The dispute over the sovereignty of the archipelago dates back to the 19th century and in 1982 involved a guerra directly between the two countries. Buenos Aires has traditionally been against any gesture towards LondonTherefore, the 2016 pact was viewed with special suspicion, mainly on the political left.
