Last Sunday, November 19, the far-right Javier Milei won the presidential elections in Argentina, a result that was recognized by his opponent, the current Minister of Economy, Sergio Massa.

After Milei’s victory, several figures spoke out on social networks, including Gustavo Pedro, president of Colombia.

“The extreme right has won in Argentina; “It is the decision of his society,” Petro expressed on his X account (formerly Twitter).

In the publication, the Colombian president added that it is “sad for Latin America and we will see… neoliberalism no longer has a proposal for society, it cannot respond to the current problems of humanity.”

That publication reactivated the confrontation on social networks between Gustavo Petro and Nayib Bukele, his Salvadoran counterpart.

After Bukele’s comment, several users went viral in the message by spreading it on other social networks and on Monday, November 20, Sofía Petro, daughter of the Colombian president, sent a response to the Salvadoran president.

“Think about those 30,000 missing people that today they want to erase again and it does make you want to cry. Unless one doesn’t have a bit of memory or heart left,” Sofía posted on her X account.

According to international media, the daughter of the Colombian head of state defended her father from Bukele’s mockery and in her response, He made reference to the number of missing people during the last Argentine dictatorship (1976-1983), according to human rights organizations.

The message quickly resonated and, as happened with Bukele’s publication, Sofía’s response was viralized by users on social networks.

Colombia congratulated Milei

On Monday, November 20, the Colombian Government congratulated the elected president of Argentina, Javier Milei, and expressed its intention to deepen the friendship and cooperation between the two countries, in a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Colombia congratulates the elected president Javier Milei and expresses its firm willingness to work to continue deepening the ties of friendship and cooperation that have governed the relations of the two nations,” said the message from the Foreign Ministry.

Likewise, he “congratulates the Argentine people for their active and civic participation in the election day” on Sunday, “as a sign of their commitment to democratic practices.”

This message had a more diplomatic tone than the statement made in Latina”.

Last Wednesday, November 15, Petro had asked Argentines to vote for Massa and against the “barbarism” that he attributes to Milei. “Have no doubts. You should never vote for barbarism and you should always vote for hope,” he then published on his social networks.
