2023 Rugby World Cup in FrancedossierIf it seems to be a child’s disguise, the headgear unveiled on Saturday continues a tradition from England and adopted by international rugby authorities since the creation of the event in 1987, for the greatest pride of the players.

What is that thing ? A joke ? A montage ? Poor French rugby team forced to appear decked out with this navy blue and gold thing that looks like a military cap that’s too small and mushy, crowned by a pompom. This is what we said to each other on Saturday, when we discovered the photo posted by Antoine Dupont on X (fire Twitter), on the occasion of one of the welcoming ceremonies for the World Cup which will open on Friday September 8 in France to conclude on October 28. Our valiant captain doesn’t look delighted… He’s more up to his business in his “collab” with the Ami brandbased on baggy and sweatshirts.

“Call of duty,” says the caption of this post. Admirable stoicism. We, we would talk about sacrifice and we would denounce a trap, asking for an investigation into the fomenting brain – we find nothing wrong, on the other hand, with the national dress for this raout: blue jersey, white shorts, red socks, the FFR and the Sporting Rooster have been effective, and mention to the large scarlet rooster which adorns jerseys and shorts.

Except that we then learn (with some relief) that this cap has no aesthetic purpose. It aims only at the honorific and the symbolic. And it is the pride of its recipients, who are not the only French players but all the participating teams. It’s because “this cap is the modern version of an ancestral tradition, explains the Parisian. It has always been given to each selected for the World Cup since the creation of the event in 1987. […] Since 2015 and the World Cup in England in particular, the headdresses have been put on with great fanfare, in the middle of the public. It is also on the other side of the Channel that the symbol was born, from the first international matches in the 19th century. The federations of football, rugby, and all collective sports had as a rule to reward each player before he puts on the jersey of their country. The world of ovality does not speak of caps but of “cape”, the English term, each corresponding to a selection for the national team. We therefore better understand the expression “most capped player”.

That said, “the modern take on an age-old tradition,” uh…vintage might just pass. By the way, to whom do we owe this mothballish style, more or less renewed since 1987? At the press service of the FFR, we are told that the decision maker is World Rugby, the world governing body of rugby union and organizer, every four years, of the World Cup.
