Father Pedro Fernández Vara, presided over a Eucharist to celebrate his centenary, after which he stated: “In the Mass I have remembered all my life, all my pastoral work”, as reported the Diocese of Zamora (Spain),

The centennial priest was born on September 1, 1923 in the town of Ferreras de Abajo (located in the province of Zamora and belonging to the Diocese of Astorga). That year, King Alfonso XIII appointed Miguel Primo de Rivera to lead the Government of Spain.

While still a child, at barely 8 years old, in 1931 he attended the fall of the Monarchy and the establishment of the Second Spanish Republic, deeply anticlerical in nature. A short time later he witnessed the coup d’état by the left in 1934, known as the Asturian Revolution, the insurrection of the Army against the Government in 1936 and the subsequent Civil War, which he survived as a teenager.
