in short:

  • The sixth generation of E Class has arrived in Israel
  • It will be marketed initially in only two engine versions
  • The price starts at NIS 539,000

Take 6: About a year after its unveiling, the sixth generation of the Mercedes E Class arrives in Israel. The price starts at NIS 539,000 – more expensive than its German competitors.

The latest E is based on the platform of its predecessor (MRA) and presents slightly generous dimensions. Another 1.5 cm in length (495), 3 cm in width (188 cm) and 2 cm in the wheelbase (296 cm). The trunk remains the same volume (540 liters and 370 liters in the hybrid version – loaded).

Mercedes did not overdo it with appearance changes compared to the outgoing generation, and incorporated an electric EQE-like nose, rears similar to the S Class and hidden door handles to further reduce the already excellent drag coefficient (0.23).

In the passenger cabin there is considerable use of recycled and environmentally friendly materials, and the high level of finish also includes the super-screen that combines three adjacent screens, similar to the brand’s luxury electric models. According to Mercedes, the operating system is now based on a single central computer that allows for faster information transfer.

In the first stage, the car will be marketed in two versions of the same engine – turbo-gasoline with four cylinders with a volume of 2.0 liters. The first is the E200 version with 204 hp with the help of a mild hybrid system (48V), the second is a plug-in hybrid version (E300e) that adds an electric motor with 129 hp to create a combined output of 313 hp.

Batteries with a capacity of 25.4 kWh provide a declared electric range of 100 km and the car can be quickly charged (50 kW) in about half an hour. Both versions have a nine-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive.

What else you need to know: There are two trim levels and both have all the manufacturer’s advanced safety systems. Includes, among other things, a 14.4″ multimedia screen, a 12.3″ dashboard, an original navigation package, wireless smartphone charging, heated front seats, electric adjustment and memories for the driver’s seat, vacuum closing for the doors and adaptive suspension.

The higher level adds, among other things, an additional 12.3″ screen (third) in front of the passenger, a Burmeister sound system, improved seats with cooling, an extended heating package for the steering wheel, seat cushions and armrests, air suspension, rear steering (4.5 degrees which reduces the radius by -90 cm – less than A Class) and digital and adaptive front lighting. For both trim levels, you can also add the AMG-line package, which is mainly cosmetic.

What we think: The E Class is the best-selling Mercedes model of all time. This is why Mercedes maintains the recipe of its predecessors in the dynasty, and in relation to what is accepted in the industry today, upgrades it only slightly.

This will not make its competition in the current market any easier, because alongside traditional competitors such as the Audi A6 and the BMW 5 Series, there is also the electric EQE standing next to it in the showroom and a number of new electric competitors that challenge the legacy of the luxury worlds.
