The Spanish right demanded the resignation of Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez due to suspicions of corruption against his government, France Press reported.
The Popular Party announced it would file a complaint against Sánchez’s party over the allegations after new information emerged about a Sánchez confidant.
According to the People’s Party, the details that are being revealed paint a picture of systematic corruption headed by Sanchez, and he should resign, BTA reported.
The Socialist Party is suspected of illegal funding and influence peddling and the People’s Party will demand an investigation into this unprecedented scandal, a party spokeswoman said.
These statements followed the publication in Spanish media this week of a report by the Civil Guard, which placed at the center of a corruption scandal Jose Luis Abalos – a former confidant and ex-minister of Pedro Sánchez. The scandal is related to the purchase of masks during the coronavirus pandemic.
Abalos was the minister of transport in the government of Sánchez in the period 2018 – 2021, and in the following years he was one of the close associates of the prime minister. He was eventually expelled from the Socialist Party in February when the scandal first emerged.
Abalos was detained and accused of receiving kickbacks in connection with the contracts for the purchase of masks. So far, Abalos, who is an MP, has not been officially charged with anything.
