A dramatic day in the World Cup: after Costa Rica’s surprising victory over Japan, the Moroccan team also surprised today (Sunday) by beating Belgium with a score of 2:0.

Belgium came into the game knowing that a win would surely advance them to the next stage, as they already have 3 points after the victory over Canada – while Morocco came into the game in second place, with one point. Thus the Moroccans had something to play for, even though they knew that the chance of beating Belgium was very low.

In the last minute of the first half, the Moroccans scored an impressive goal from a free kick, which was annulled by the VAR on the grounds of a difference. In the 74th minute, the Moroccans surprised again when Abdelhamid Sabiri scored from a free kick – this time the referee confirmed the goal and put Morocco up 1:0. The Belgians had several opportunities after that – but were unable to equalize, and just before the end of the game the Moroccans scored again and closed the game.

Following the victory, Morocco rose to the top of the home team with 4 points, and can advance to the round of 16 with a win in their last game on Thursday. In the second game today in group 6, Croatia will play against Canada, with Croatia having one point and Canada having 0.
