The University of Girona (UdG) has digitized the personal funds of exiled people which has the Exile Memorial Museum (MUME). These are letters, official papers, photographs and other objects that the families of the exiles gave to the museum. From now on they can check online to know the most personal perspective of exile. In addition, the UdG has also cataloged the more than 3,000 volumes in the MUME library, a catalog that can also be consulted online. On the other hand, the university has ceded the exhibition ‘From the Republic to exile: the paths of the teachers’, which can be seen in the Jonquera museum until October 15.

From now on, the MUME fund will be available check online and the curious will be able to search through a search engine for objects and books about exile that are part of the museum’s collection. The action taken by the University of Girona is divided into two parts: on the one hand, it has cataloged the collection of books held by the museum of exile, where there are more than 3,000 works on the Civil War and exile The catalog is now available on the museum’s website.

On the other hand, the university has objects digitized that the MUME has from personal funds. The funds contain personal objects such as letters, diaries, photographs or official documents among other objects about people who went into exile. Through this documentation you can get to know the most personal part of the Civil War and also the path of exile. The objects can be consulted online.

On the other hand, the MUME and the UdG have participated to make one exhibition project. The university has ceded to the museum of La Jonquera ‘From the Republic to exile: the paths of the teachers’, an exhibition that complements the exhibition ‘Exiles. The intertwined red threads’. Both samples can be seen at MUME until October 15.

In the exhibition provided by the UdG, there is documentation that Professor Salomó Marquès compiled over decades. Throughout the exhibition, the role played by teachers during the Republic, who worked actively for the rights of women and children, is vindicated. These values departed with the outbreak of the armed conflict and the flight of teachers such as Margalida Comas or the sisters Josefa and Elisa Úriz.

This collaboration is the result of a agreement between the University of Girona and the Exile Memorial Museum Consortium, which was signed in 2020 with the aim of linking both institutions. The MUME is a space for memory, history and critical reflection. It is an interpretation center that remembers the exiles caused by the Civil War and that combines museum functions with those of historical research and educational dissemination. The UdG participates in the consortium that governs the MUME, alongside the Generalitat de Catalunya, La Jonquera City Council and the Regional Council of Alt Empordà. Since 2010, the MUME has been part of the Network of Memory Spaces of Catalonia that energizes the Democratic Memorial.
