The spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ravina Shamdasani, on Tuesday urged the Russian and Ukrainian authorities to investigate reports of alleged execution orders for prisoners of war by both sides in the framework of the Russian invasion.

We urgently call on the parties to investigate and publicly condemn the audio recordings that have been released over the weekend and in which several people allegedly related to the conflict in Ukraine order the execution of prisonershas asserted in a statement in which it has condemned that, in some of these audios, there is also talk of not leaving survivors on the battlefield.

The audio recordings came to light on April 23 through various Telegram channels and in them they asked the fighters stop taking prisoners of war and execute those who had already been captured.

In one of these recordings, an alleged Ukrainian soldier is heard ordering the killing of a Wagner Group prisoner of war. In another, a mercenary from that group talks about the end of this type of prisoner, to whom he asks not to give any chance to survive on the ground.

Although we have not yet been able to verify the authenticity of these recordings, these types of comments can provoke or promote the arbitrary executions of prisoners of war.has stated Shamdasani, who has asked the parties and the prisoners themselves to fulfill their obligations under International Law and investigate this matter to identify those responsible.

In addition, it has called on military commanders and other superiors to end ambiguous orders and protect and treat those hors de combat humanely and ensure that these orders are strictly followed.
