The implementation of the Zangezur Corridor project will expand the throughput capacity of the Middle Corridor by 8-10 million tons per year.

As Day.Az reports on Tuesday, this was stated by Deputy Ministry of Digital Development and Transport of Azerbaijan Rakhman Gummatov during the presentation of a study on the Middle Corridor conducted today by the World Bank in Tbilisi.

“The implementation of large-scale infrastructure projects continues in the liberated territories of Azerbaijan. Investing in roads and railways in Karabakh to restore historical ties is a priority, involving the establishment of communication lines. In this regard, the Zangezur Corridor project will create great opportunities for the development of the transport and logistics sector and will become part of “Middle Corridor. This project will significantly reduce the distance, resulting in a significant increase in throughput – by 8-10 million tons per year. Together, we are committed to realizing the full potential of the Middle Corridor, ensuring its continued success as a vital route for trade,” he said.

It should be noted that the Zangezur Corridor project proposed by Azerbaijan is aimed at establishing transport links between the main territory of Azerbaijan and its exclave, the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, passing through the territory of Armenia.

This project arose in the course of the implementation of the agreements set out in the trilateral statement signed by the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia following the results of the Second Karabakh War in 2020.

One of the elements of the document confirmed Armenia’s readiness to ensure the security of transport communications with Nakhchivan, facilitating the free movement of people, vehicles and goods in both directions.
