HomeBerlinOpen-air cinemas: These are my three Berlin favorites

Summer in Berlin means open-air cinema time. Our author presents her three favorite cinemas and their advantages.

Freiluftkino Kreuzberg

The Kreuzberg open-air cinema is so special because films are always shown there in the original with subtitles, i.e. original subtitles. And German films always have English subtitles. The cinema at Mariannenplatz was founded in 1994. In the old, idyllic backyard of the Künstlerhaus Bethanien, visitors sit on beach loungers or plastic chairs in the green courtyard surrounded by trees, with their backs to the building. Despite the central location in the middle of Kreuzberg, there is practically no street noise to be heard here.

Address: Mariannenplatz 2

Hasenheide open-air cinema

The Volkspark Hasenheide in the Neukölln district was opened in 1925, and the open-air cinema has been there since the late 1980s. The complex dates from the 1950s, when a natural theater was built on the rubble from the Second World War, where plays, but also operas and operettas were performed. Today the Hasenheide open-air cinema is located in the middle of the park between many trees. There have been two stages and screens here since 2021. The screen of the main stage is installed in the former orchestra pit, in front of which about 1000 people can be seated. In addition to film screenings, the new, slightly smaller stage also hosts readings, plays and discussions. There the spectators sit on comfortable chairs surrounded by tall trees through which the sun shines through.

Open air cinema in Friedrichshain

The great thing about the Friedrichshain open-air cinema is the huge screen. Up to 2000 people can be seated in front of it. And then the big meadow. You can even have a picnic here, and if you don’t want to bring your own food and drinks, you can stock up at the snack bar there. The open-air stage was built in 1950 in the southwestern part of the Volkspark Friedrichshain. In 1987 she was converted for a Swiss troupe’s dolphin show, which was incredibly popular. After seven months, about 1.9 million people had seen the show. Today there is the open-air cinema. Even dogs are allowed, but only on a leash.

Address: In the Volkspark, Ernst-Zinna-Weg
