Two weeks after the agreement, the 27-year-old completed the sports medical examination in Munich on Monday and then signed the working paper with the German record champions, which is valid until June 30, 2021. Munich should pay an estimated transfer fee of 38 million euros. Hummels would have had a year’s contract with BVB.

“We are happy to welcome Mats back to Bayern Munich,” said CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, according to a statement on Monday. “With him, we’re not only enriching our team with a world-class central defender, but also with a player who doesn’t shy away from responsibility and, what’s more, comes from our youth. Now we wish him a successful European Championship.”

Hummels joined FC Bayern in 1995 at the age of six. From 2005 he played for two and a half years under Hermann Gerland – today’s assistant coach of the professionals – in the amateurs. In May 2007 he made his professional debut at the Allianz Arena. In January 2008, Hummels left Bayern Munich for Borussia Dortmund.

“Of course it was difficult for me to say goodbye to Dortmund. I felt the same way in 2008 when I went in the other direction,” said Hummels when signing the contract. “Now I’m just looking forward to everything that awaits me at Bayern. I am very excited.”
