Kuwaiti local newspapers reported that an investigation committee in the National Assembly revealed that 142 people had forged university degrees issued by Egyptian universities, and that the forgery process was carried out with the help of employees of the Kuwaiti Cultural Office in Egypt.
The head of the Education Affairs Committee, Hamad al-Matar, said in remarks reported by the electronic newspaper “The Council” and Al-Jarida newspaper that the parliamentary investigation committee, emanating from the Education Affairs Committee in the National Assembly, concluded that there were 142 citizens who obtained forged certificates issued by Egyptian universities.
The Parliamentary Investigation Committee emanating from the Education Affairs Committee in the National Assembly had met to discuss the issue of forged certificates, in the presence of the Minister of Education, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Hamad Al-Adwani, and higher education leaders, according to Al-Jarida.
Al-Matar said in statements to Al-Jarida that the investigation committee began serious work to uncover the circumstances of the forgery operations, which began years ago in university degrees, to reach the full truth with numbers, names and those involved, whether they were expatriates or citizens.
He explained that the investigation revealed in principle that an expatriate working in Kuwait was behind the forging of these certificates, and the security authorities stopped him, indicating that the certificates were issued by real universities in Egypt, but they were forged.
He added that this expatriate is currently imprisoned with sentences ranging from 50 to 60 years, depending on each certificate he forged, and that the value of forging one certificate ranges between 300 dinars (about $980) and 500 dinars (about $1,632).
He stressed that the investigation committee wants to uncover the circumstances of all the forgery cases of this expatriate and the citizens who helped him, “some of whom are employees of the Kuwaiti Cultural Office in Egypt.”
Al-Matar said, “In the next meeting, we will summon the Minister of Higher Education and the ministry’s leaders, as well as the Civil Service Bureau, the Ministry of Interior, the head of the Kuwaiti Cultural Office in Egypt, and the workforce, to investigate every big and small matter about the forged certificates and reach all the threads of this big issue.” .
