The sanction has already been confirmed by the District Court in Plovdiv

The regional environmental and water inspectorate fined the former mayor of Stamboliyski Georgi Maradzhiev with BGN 2,000 for a landfill near the Maritsa River near the city. The on-site inspection was carried out following a signal in Maradzhiev’s second term – on May 2, 2018. After the Stamboliyski sewage treatment plant on the left side of a dirt Polish road in the direction of the river, the inspectors found piles of garbage – household and construction waste, bouquets of flowers, plastic packaging, used tires, earthenware tiles, terracotta and sanitary ware. Some of them were poured along the Maritsa dike. Maradzhiev was given instructions to clear the site by May 16, 2023, but a new inspection the day after the deadline found that there were traces of heavy-duty equipment on the site, some of the waste had been spread out and leveled, and most of it had been moved to the landfill terrace on the river.

This is how the criminal decree was written, appealed by Maradzhiev with the argument that the contaminated property is managed by the “Irrigation System”. According to the Law on Waste Management, however, the responsibility for landfills on the territory of each municipality lies with the mayors, therefore the Regional Court confirms the fine. The decision is subject to appeal before the administrative magistrates.
