Hyundai’s division, Hyundai Mobis, is trying to make electric cars more efficient. One method could be to reintroduce large grilles to the front of the car, something that is traditional for cars with internal combustion engines and which was thought to disappear with electric cars.

Hyundai engineers concluded that the active aerodynamic air system in the front grille can help optimize airflow and reduce power consumption. The whole thing consists of four parts that Hyundai calls Active Aero Hood (AAH), Active Air Flap (AAF), Active Air Curtain (AAC) and Active Air Skirt (AAS).

The system automatically opens and closes parts of the grille and hood and folds the spoilers, which reduces air resistance during fast driving and improves fuel economy. The system also allows for air intake and exhaust, which improves battery cooling efficiency and controls airflow. Overall, Hyundai Mobis believes it can improve the range of electric cars by up to 20 km.

Hyundai’s video shows the various functions of the aerodynamic system.
