The widespread authorizations for the recreational use of cannabis in the United States worry a sector of the scientific community, given the harmful effects of the substance on children and pregnant women. Twenty-three of the 50 states in that country have already given the green light to legalization.

Cannabis alters the calibration of neural activity, which can harm a developing brain, including future mental health problems. Its use has been associated with schizophrenia in adolescents, recalls an investigation in the journal Science.
