The year 2024 is full of news, especially in terms of taxes, since many of these will increase, affecting both individuals and companies. The Intergenerational Equity Mechanism (MEI), which was approved in 2021 with the aim of guaranteeing the sustainability of pensions, will be one of those that will increase, fully affecting the payroll of Spaniards.

This new fee replaces the old Sustainability Factor approved in the 2013 pension reform and translates into a tax that came into force on January 1, 2023 to finance the next retirement of the largest generation, that of the “baby boom”. ”. This year, the MEI represents an additional contribution of 0.6% on the gross salary; of this percentage, 0.5 points corresponds to the company and 0.1% to the workers.

Although the first part of the pension reform contemplated that the MEI would be in force from 2023 to 2032 as an additional contribution of 0.6%; The second part of the pension reform contemplates raising the MEI contribution to 1.2% in 2029, at a rate of one tenth per year, with the company taking charge of 1% and the worker, 0.2%:

2024: it will be 0.70 percentage points, of which 0.58 will correspond to the company and 0.12 to the worker. 2025: it will be 0.80 percentage points, of which 0.67 will correspond to the company and 0.13 to the worker.2026: it will be 0.90 percentage points, of which 0.75 will correspond to the company and 0.15 to the worker.2027: it will be 1 percentage point, of which 0, 83 will correspond to the company and 0.17 to the worker. 2028: it will be 1.10 percentage points, of which 0.92 will correspond to the company and 0.18 to the worker. 2029: it will be 1.2 points percentages, of which 1.00 will correspond to the company and 0.2 to the worker. This MEI surcharge will remain at 1.2% from 2030 to 2050 with equal distribution between employer and worker. Therefore, in 2024 the MEI will rise to 0.7%. After this increase, the worker will go from assuming a contribution of 0.1 points to 0.12%; while the company will be responsible for 0.58%, compared to the 0.5 they faced in 2023. In this way, said increase will have an effect on the workers’ payroll, which will mean that they will earn less in 2024. . In the case of the self-employed, the 0.7% will fall entirely on these workers, as well as their subsequent increases.

In the case of those workers who receive an average gross salary (22,781 euros in 2022), this year they have paid 2.2 euros per month for the MEI, while in 2024 they will pay 2.7 euros, which represents an annual amount that amounts to 26.4 euros and 32.4 euros, respectively. In the case of the company, in 2023 they had to pay 136.68 euros per year – 11.39 per month – and this new year they will have to pay 158.52 euros per year – 13.21 euros per month.

Furthermore, in 2024 the maximum contribution base will increase by 5% in 2024, reaching around 4,720.27 euros per month (56,643 euros per year). Therefore, those who contribute for the maximum base will pay 6.79 euros per month for the MEI or 81.5 euros per year. In the case of the company, the impact will be even greater, since in total they will pay 394.2 euros per year for this concept, that is, 32.85 per month.
