There is still hope for a white Christmas in Austria thanks to an American model.
There is still hope for a white Christmas in Austria thanks to an American model.
A white Christmas is probably the dream of many Austrians, but so far this year there hasn’t been much snow – especially in the south. Although the statistics speak against it, there is now hope.

It hasn’t snowed much or often in Austria this year, and Christmas is getting closer and closer. So do we have to say goodbye to a bright Christmas? Although the statistics say yes (more on that here: White Christmas: What about the snow on Christmas Eve?), an American weather model is fighting back a bit right now geosphere Austria-Meteorologist Gerhard Hohenwarter reveals on his Instagram page.
I hope for a white Christmas
In less than two weeks, the Christmas tree will be in Austrian households and gifts will be happily exchanged and unpacked. But many people won’t be able to get into the Christmas spirit just yet, becuase there’s one thing missing in many parts of the country: snow. Every year, people don’t give up hope for a bright Christmas – for many it’s almost like a myth. Though, there is still hope this year. “The straw was America’s model this morning,” Hohenwarter said.
“Straw for us in the South to cling to”
Although the weather has remained the same for weeks and snow has only fallen in the north and along the main Alpine ridge, that could change on Christmas Eve.According to the current model, the south would suffer a lot, from East Tyrol via Carinthia to Styria it could go white on December 24,2024. But: Forecasts that far into the future are not very reliable. still a lot of change. Hohenwarter knows that too, but still: “It’s a straw we can cling to here in the south.”
