She had her breakthrough in her early 20s. 50 years later, Gaby Baginsky is still on stage. The singer speaks to t-online on her 70th birthday.

With her lively manner and the song “Don’t hang up your guitar,” Gaby Baginsky sang her way into the hearts of pop fans in the mid-1970s. Hits like “Thieves come in the evening”, “The Rum of Barbados” and “Men only understand what they want” made them a fixture in the industry. She was a welcome guest on TV shows such as the “ZDF Hitparade” and even took part in the German preliminary round for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1982.

Gaby Baginsky is still on stage today and has released 25 albums in her 50-year career. The last thing last year: “We can get older later.” The singer, who is celebrating her 70th birthday today, February 21st, doesn’t feel old by any means, as she tells t-online in an interview.

t-online: How to celebrate your 70th birthday?

Gaby Baginsky: The last big birthday I celebrated was my 40th – that was amazing. There were more than 250 people in a rustic restaurant opposite the castle in Bad Bentheim. Many of my hit colleagues came, including Dieter-Thomas Heck. There was a fantastic knight’s dinner and the atmosphere was great. I only celebrated my 50th and 60th in a small circle. It will be the same with this birthday.

Does this zero feel different?

Basically, other people are always driving you crazy. It’s just a number that I don’t attach much importance to. I feel young.

What is your opinion on optical aging?

I’m definitely not going to the beauty doc! I don’t want Botox, lip injections, implants or a facelift. A nice, well-groomed make-up and a chic hairstyle are enough for me. Less is more in old age.

They are still on stage. Are you not thinking about quitting?

My physiotherapist says I’m as fit as a 50-year-old. Even the bone density is perfect. So why should I stop? I’ll keep going as long as I’m well.

A big birthday is always a milestone that you look back on. Would you have done anything differently?

There are always ups and downs. That’s part of life. Everything is fine the way it is.

Have you ever regretted not having children?

If it had been meant to be, I wouldn’t have been mad. But I never looked forward to it or thought about seeing a doctor about it. I have my cats. They are a kind of child replacement.

Have you prepared financially?

Yes, my husband and I definitely saved money. We also have different insurance policies and if one of us were to leave, the other would inherit his share. If we both die, half of the assets will go to a foundation for children with cancer and the other half will go to animal welfare organizations.
