Even today, many of us look for signs indicating the presence of a service station nearby to fill up with gasoline or diesel. But now, thermal cars are experiencing their last years of life, at least in terms of the production of new models. Electric has become the new norm. So, even if there is debate on batteries and their recycling in particular, the number of terminals will continue to grow to meet the needs of drivers.

Thus, if we have already exceeded the 430 stations and 2,000 terminals available to the general public in Paris in December 2023 or the 100,000 terminals in France last spring, the objective remains reach 400,000 charging points by 2030. We will need people to set up this entire network, monitor it on a daily basis and deal with breakdowns or small problems typical of this type of installation.

This is particularly why the profession of electrical terminal engineer – IRVE engineer, to use the technical term – is booming. As there is currently no specific basic course, professionals – engineers specializing in electricity often at the base, or technicians who have followed training in their company in particular – are opening up this new source of employment.

Participate in the decarbonization of mobility

“I really wanted a job linked to the ecological transition. When we look at where the world is going, I think the time to act has arrived. Being an IRVE engineer makes me participate in these changes in habits that we must all adopt, underlines in the preamble Alex Djadji, engineer for IDEX, one of the terminal installers on the market. I am there from the preparation of the project with the clients, for the entire studies part, then I continue in the field with those who set up, install and launch the terminals. There is a civil engineering part and another electricity part of course. I am there to ensure that everything goes well, as the guarantor of security. »

IRVE engineers are indeed at a crossroads. They manage the installation of the installations and also work in close collaboration with the manufacturers, not only to know the products well but also to resolve any technical problems which never fail to arise. “Yes, I create and improve processes to make life easier for technicians, commissioning but also maintenance,” confirms Auxence Labrousse, employed for three years at Powerdot, which has some 3,100 terminals throughout the country. . My job also consists of monitoring, behind my computer, the network, the servers, the usage rate or even any faults that may occur. I also analyze user feedback or the various updates to the configuration systems. There are concerns that I can handle remotely and some that may require me to travel. »

The other exciting part is the tie-ups with manufacturers. Specialists regularly travel to French or foreign factories to be trained in new, increasingly high-tech products. Today, almost everywhere, fast charging terminals are needed to save time and avoid long queues like we have sometimes seen at motorway rest areas. The challenge will not only be to have enough charging points but also to be able to satisfy all needs, particularly during the summer peaks.

When it comes to remuneration, again, the range is quite wide. If you are a technician without much experience, count on 25,000 to 30,000 euros gross per year. If you start as an engineer, you will climb to the next level and can negotiate between 35,000 and 45,000 euros, for beginners, or reach 55,000 euros if you already have a little experience. Attractive salaries in a growing market. Especially since a whole part of your activity can very well be carried out in… teleworking, behind your computer. “There are more and more positions because we have a profession that makes sense,” concludes Alex Djadji. We are here to give a helping hand to the planet. »

François Paradis, general manager of Bump

Created in 2021 in Paris, Bump already employs around 70 people and has experienced double-digit growth since its arrival on the market. This start-up is recruiting, and even a lot, to participate in the decarbonization of mobility. This year, it is looking for between 10 and 20 people with the aim of expanding its workforce, as François Paradis, its general director, points out.

PROFILES. “I am looking for maintenance technicians (pro baccalaureate), supervision technicians (pro baccalaureate and electrotechnical BTS), IRVE experts (engineer profiles) or even product builders (developer engineer profiles) capable of digging into an incident and resolving it. . You also need certain interpersonal skills to work with terminal suppliers. This is why we rather recruit profiles who already have one year of experience in this sector. »

COMPENSATION. “The salary ranges are, for technicians, between 35,000 and 41,000 euros gross annually depending on experience and, for engineering profiles, from 40,000 to 60,000 euros depending on seniority in this type of position. »

EVOLUTIONS. “With us, a maintenance technician has today become an IRVE expert who fully masters the supervision tools to investigate any problems. We also have internal training that allows people to develop and then lead them to lead, why not, teams. It is within this framework that we have a promotion committee every six months. Moreover, our salary scale is shared with everyone and it changes depending on seniority and position. »
