Threats in the U.S. Rising as Hamas Invasion of Israel Continues, Warns FBI Director

In a rare phone briefing for reporters on Sunday, FBI Director Christopher Wray and FBI officials expressed concerns about the rising threats in the U.S. following Hamas’ invasion of Israel a week ago. Wray emphasized that the threat is ongoing and evolving, stating, “Here in the U.S., we cannot and do not discount the possibility that Hamas or other foreign terrorist organizations could exploit the conflict to call on their supporters to conduct attacks on our own soil.”

Wray highlighted that both Jews and Muslims, along with their institutions and houses of worship, have been targeted with threats in the United States. He assured reporters that the FBI is taking swift action to mitigate these threats and ensure the safety of the affected communities.

Speaking at the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Wray also pointed out an increase in reported threats related to recent events. He specifically cautioned about keeping an eye out for lone actors who may be inspired by these events to commit acts of violence. He urged police chiefs to remain vigilant as they are often the first to notice signs of potential violence.

Senior FBI officials acknowledged that most of the threats are not credible and have been addressed. However, they reiterated that the bureau’s primary concern lies with lone wolf-style attackers who go unnoticed. The officials emphasized the importance of public tips in identifying and preventing these threats. They further disclosed that both Muslim and Jewish facilities have faced threats, with an increase in threats against Muslim centers and a spike in antisemitic threats.

To address these threats and protect the affected communities, the FBI is collaborating through Joint Terrorism Task Forces. Wray emphasized that countering terrorism is the bureau’s number one priority and vowed not to tolerate violence motivated by hate and extremism.

Wray also highlighted the efforts of the FBI’s legal attaché office in Tel Aviv, working closely with Israeli and U.S. Embassy partners to locate and identify all Americans impacted in the region, including those still unaccounted for. He assured that victim services specialists are extending support to victims and their families both at home and abroad.

As the conflict between Israel and Hamas intensifies, the FBI remains committed to ensuring the safety of the United States and addressing the growing threats posed by this conflict.
