Tiffany Stratton Details Her Journey and Road to WWE

by Liam O'Connor Sports Editor

In the high-glamour world of modern professional wrestling, Tiffany Stratton arrives as a fully formed phenomenon. With her precise athleticism and commanding presence, she has quickly established herself as one of the most promising talents in the industry, having captured the NXT Women’s Championship and transitioned into a focal point of the main roster.

However, the polished image of “Tiffy Time” belies a journey defined by gritty determination and a series of improbable coincidences. For Stratton, the Tiffany Stratton road to WWE was not a linear path but a trial of persistence that spanned years of training in nondescript gyms and a global pandemic that nearly derailed her career before it began.

The transition from a competitive athlete to a professional wrestler was sparked by a sudden realization around 2021. Drawing inspiration from the success of Charlotte Flair, Stratton recognized that her lifelong background in gymnastics and bodybuilding had uniquely prepared her for the physical and performative demands of the ring. This realization set off a relentless pursuit of a career that, only a few years prior, had been entirely foreign to her.

From Gymnastics to the ‘Sketchy’ Side of Town

Stratton’s entry into the sport began in Minnesota, where she sought out local training. Her first stop was the Pro Wrestling Academy, owned by former WWE performer Mr. Kennedy. The environment was a far cry from the bright lights of a stadium; Stratton recalls the gym being located on a “very sketchy side of town,” where she often found herself as the only woman in the room, learning the fundamental art of taking “bumps.”

The trajectory of her training shifted due to a chance encounter involving her mother, a nurse practitioner. During a home visit to a patient, Stratton’s mother noticed wrestling posters on the wall, which led to a connection with Greg Gagne, the son of WWE Hall of Famer Verne Gagne. Gagne eventually agreed to train Stratton and it was during their first session that her gymnastics background became a decisive advantage.

“He watches me accept my first flip bump, and he was like, ‘You’ve never done that before?’ And I was like, ‘No.’ But I do it all the time on the trampoline,” Stratton said. “That’s something you do all the time in gymnastics, the one-footed flip bump. He could not believe that it was just so straightforward for me to do it on the first try and off one foot and then run the ropes.”

While Gagne was impressed by her natural aptitude, the relationship was not without friction. Gagne has previously noted that the early days of their training were “rocky,” at one point even asking Stratton to leave a session. However, the experience served as a necessary reality check, refining her work ethic and preparing her for the rigors of a professional tryout.

The Pandemic Interruption and the 18-Month Wait

By March 2020, Stratton’s preparation had earned her an invitation to a WWE tryout. She arrived ready and nervous, only to discover her dreams paused by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the world shut down, WWE flew the aspiring recruits home, leaving their futures in a state of total uncertainty.

For many, such a setback would have been a signal to move on. For Stratton, it was an invitation to double down. During the lockdown, she turned her father’s basement into a training facility, focusing on bodybuilding and weightlifting, where she eventually set a record in her weightlifting class. Despite her success in the gym, her focus remained on the ring.

Over the next 18 months, Stratton maintained a persistent line of communication with WWE, emailing the company every other month to inquire about new tryout opportunities. This tenacity eventually paid off in the summer of 2021, when she was invited back to compete against a small group of other women.

A Last-Minute Debut and Rapid Ascent

Stratton entered her second tryout with a level of confidence born from years of anticipation. She felt she stood out not just because of her athleticism, but because of her charisma and ability to handle the basics—running the ropes, taking bumps, and delivering promos—with ease. Shortly after, she was signed by recruiter Canyon Ceman and relocated to Florida to join the WWE Performance Center.

Her televised debut was as chaotic as her early training days. In a match on 205 Live against Amari Miller, Stratton was notified of the bout only 24 hours in advance. With no official gear ready, she improvised a look using a pink fuzzy top from Amazon and shoes from Shein. The makeshift outfit did nothing to hide her talent; the performance impressed WWE officials and led to her promotion to the NXT roster the following month.

The climb from the basement in Minnesota to the top of the developmental brand was remarkably swift. By May 2023, Stratton captured the NXT Women’s Championship, cementing her status as a top-tier performer.
