The social network of Chinese origin TikTok wants to earn the trust of Brussels and its users based in the EU. The application has announced this Tuesday that it has begun to store the data of its Internet users located on community soil in Ireland, as it had promised in an attempt to allay privacy fears, which could cause that, in the future, the ‘app’ cease to be functional in the United States.

For years, TikTok has raised concern among regulators around the world. Specifically, it is concerned that its Chinese parent, Bytedance, share user data with the communist government of China. Also that the company makes its application available to Beijing to direct organized disinformation campaigns against users.

To avoid suspicion, the company promised months ago to keep all the data of European and American users off Chinese soil. The plan, which in the case of the EU and the United Kingdom is called Clover, has already been launched, according to TikTok.

“Our first data center in Dublin, in Ireland, is already operational and the migration of data from European users to this center has already begun,” the social network reported in a statement sent to ABC. The company has also indicated that it is working on the construction of two other centers that will also be used to store user data. One will be in Norway and the other, also, in Ireland.

This transfer will last until the end of 2024, said TikTok, which partnered with a British cybersecurity company, called NCC, so that it “independently audits our controls and data protections, monitors data flows, provides verification independent and report any incidents.”

Like the vast majority of social networks, TikTok stores large amounts of information from its users. Among this, some unnecessary to offer service, such as the IP address to locate you approximately or your browsing history, which allows us to better understand your tastes. Despite suspicions, the alleged access by the Chinese government to information belonging to the application has never been proven.
