Jakarta The short video platform TikTok wants to pump billions into the markets in Southeast Asia in the coming years to expand its e-commerce business. Content is becoming more diverse as the company gains more users and e-commerce expands, CEO Shou Zi Chew said at an event in Indonesia on Thursday.

TikTok has 8,000 employees in Southeast Asia and two million micro-vendors who sell their goods on the platform. Users can purchase the goods during live broadcasts via advertising links in the app.

Southeast Asia is one of the largest markets for TikTok according to user numbers. However, the app, which is particularly popular with young people, cannot yet compete with larger competitors such as Sea’s Shopee, Alibaba’s Lazada and GoTo’s Tokopedia when it comes to online shopping. TikTok and its Chinese parent company ByteDance have been criticized worldwide for security concerns due to their proximity to the government in Beijing.
