The Rise of Digital Talent
Tilly Norwood is the creation of Particle6 Group, a production company founded by actress and producer Eline van der Velden. Van der Velden, a Dutch actress and comedian with a unique background in physics, envisions AI not as a threat, but as a “new brush” for storytelling. According to the company, utilizing an AI character like Tilly could slash production costs by as much as 90%.
Particle6 has since established an AI division called Xicoia, signaling a serious commitment to this emerging technology. Van der Velden believes AI is simply another tool, akin to animation, puppetry, or CGI, that enhances—rather than eliminates—the need for human creativity.
Backlash from the Industry
The arrival of Tilly Norwood was met with immediate and forceful opposition. Described as a young Gen Z actress, she quickly drew the ire of the SAG-AFTRA actors union and numerous established stars. Actors are voicing concerns that their livelihoods are at risk, fearing replacement by AI-driven performers who require no salary or benefits. The ability of AI to perfectly imitate human acting only exacerbates these anxieties.
Public reaction was equally swift and critical. Even actor Ryan Reynolds satirized Tilly’s character in a recent advertisement, highlighting the widespread unease surrounding the development.
A Creative Work, Not a Replacement
Responding to the criticism, Van der Velden remained resolute. “Not a substitute for humans, but a creative work or a work of art,” she stated, as reported by THR on November 19. She further argued that AI is merely a new tool for imagining and creating stories, and that Tilly’s creation is actually generating new employment opportunities behind the scenes.
Despite the controversy, Particle6 shows no signs of slowing down. Tilly Norwood is just the beginning. Van der Velden plans to develop 40 additional, highly diverse AI characters to populate “a whole new universe” of digital actors.
Expanding AI’s Role in Storytelling
Particle6 has also announced a collaboration with The History Channel in the Netherlands to produce a fully AI-assisted short history series. The project will leverage technology to create cinematic scenes of the past, reconstructed from old photographs and paintings.
