A systematic review and meta-analysis of multiple trials with this drug attests to its superiority over other comparators.

Scientists from various Chinese centers have examined the results of 14 clinical trials, with almost 12,000 diabetic patients, finding that tirzepatide reduces glycated hemoglobin levels more effectively than GLP-1 peptide receptor agonists or various types of insulin. In most of the trials analyzed, the superiority of the drug was also manifested over dulaglutide and semaglutide. Similar results were observed in relation to weight reduction. Regarding this last aspect, Qiu Chen, researcher at the University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and director of the study, points out that the reductions achieved ranged between 5 and 11 kilos, unprecedented values with the use of a single agent.

Chen goes on to indicate that tirzepatide also reduced circulating levels of triglycerides, although only compared to placebo and without a positive impact on other markers of lipid metabolism. The trials analyzed have been carried out both in patients without prior treatment and in those treated with other drugs in monotherapy or in combination, who received tirzepatide at doses of 5, 10 or 15 mg and were monitored for a period of between 8 and 72 weeks. Chen states that the adverse effects associated with the drug were dose-dependent and more frequent than those associated with the use of insulin or GLP-1 peptide receptor agonists. Compared to the latter, tirzepatide was associated with a higher rate of treatment discontinuation, although only at certain doses. The scientists conclude by indicating that both tirzepatide and other dual agonists directed at other targets, currently in development, may represent a substantial advance in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and associated comorbidities, including obesity.
