A gold pocket watch belonging to Isidor Straus, a first-class passenger who perished with his wife during the sinking of the Titanic, has sold for a record-breaking £1.78 million – the highest price ever paid for an artifact from the ill-fated liner.
The 18-carat engraved Jules Jurgensen watch was a 43rd birthday gift to Straus in 1888 and represents a poignant symbol of love and sacrifice from the disaster. The auction, held this weekend by Henry Aldridge & Son in Devizes,Wiltshire, underscores the enduring fascination with the Titanic story and the personal tragedies within it.
A legacy of Love and Loss
Straus, born in 1845 in Bavaria and later a partner in the iconic New York department store Macy’s, was traveling with his wife, ida, when the Titanic struck an iceberg in 1912. The couple were among the more than 1,500 who lost their lives, and notably, among the few first-class passengers who did not survive.
Their story has become legendary, immortalized in James Cameron’s 1997 film Titanic. Accounts from the time report that both Isidor and Ida were offered seats on a lifeboat due to their age, but Straus famously refused to leave his wife. Ida, in turn, refused to leave her husband of 41 years. They were last seen sitting together on deckchairs, facing their fate with unwavering devotion.
“The Strauses were the ultimate love story,” stated a representative from the auction house. “Ida refusing to leave her husband as the Titanic sank, and this world-record price is testament to the respect that they are held in.”
