In the Greek city of Olympia, from 776 BC to 393 BC, traditional sports were held every year in honor of the god Zeus. When Theodosius of Romapuri came to power, the contest was banned. The Games took on a modern form on June 23, 1894, becoming the Olympic Games. It was co-ordinated by Pierre Cooper, who has been called the father of the Olympics.
