Tomatoes sold at low prices in farm green shops – Minister I. Periyasamy | Tomato Sale At Low Prices In Farm Green Shops Said Minister I Periyasamy

by time news

Tomato prices have risen sharply due to continuous heavy rains and declining supply of tomatoes from overseas. A kilo of tomatoes, which was selling for Rs 60 to Rs 80 last week, is now selling for more than Rs 100. Dindigul District Ottansathram Vegetable Market sells tomatoes at Rs. 105 to Rs. 125 per kg. Thus food operators have significantly reduced their purchases of tomatoes.

Housewives who are shocked by the price of tomatoes are also cutting back on buying tomatoes. Tomatoes, which were selling for exactly Rs 30 to Rs 60 a month ago, were expected to fall in price during the summer. However, the production of tomatoes was halted due to continuous rains. While farmers are happy with the rise in prices, the middle and poor are hard hit.

In this situation, to control the price of tomatoes in Tamil Nadu, steps will be taken to sell them through farm green shops, said Cooperatives Minister I. Periyasamy. His statement in this regard is as follows: –

The Government of Tamil Nadu has taken steps to control the rise in the price of tomatoes in the open market due to the monsoon in Tamil Nadu and to sell quality tomatoes at affordable prices through the Co-operative Farm Green Consumer Stores.

During the 2021 Northeast monsoon season, 65 farm green consumer outlets run by the Cooperative will procure 150 metric tons of tomatoes and other vegetables up to 1100 metric tons at a cost of Rs. 4 crore from Rs. 45 / – to Rs. 55 / – per kg from 2711.2021 to 30.12.2021. Sold out.

Currently, the rains in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have reduced the supply of tomatoes and increased the prices. Tomatoes are sold in the open market at Rs. 90 / – to Rs. 120 / – per kg.

As a precautionary measure, 4 metric tonnes of tomatoes were procured today (19.05.2022) through the Co-operative Farm Green Novel Stores in Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Trichy districts. 70 / – to Rs. 85 / – per kg.

Following this, until the open market price of tomatoes is controlled, the operation will be carried out through 65 farm green threshing shops run by the cooperative in the districts from tomorrow. In addition, action will be taken to sell tomatoes through fair price shops based on demand.

Therefore, people are urged to buy and use quality tomatoes and vegetables at affordable prices through farm green consumer stores.

This is stated in the statement issued by Minister I. Periyasamy.
