Karim Ghezal won’t have to wait long. Having left Stade Français in September after a year working with Laurent Labit, the former French XV forwards coach has signed with Lyon.LOU Rugby made it official on Friday morning on its social networks.
A return to his roots for the man who finished his playing career at LOU between 2014 and 2016 before starting his professional journey there. Karim Ghezal will join Fabien Gengenbacher’s staff full-time as head coach.
The former second line played for LOU for two years as a player (2014-2016), before joining Pierre Mignoni’s staff as wing specialist and then forwards coach (2016-2019).
“In 2019, after my last match in the semifinals of the Top 14 in Bordeaux, I retained the idea that the story was not over. This club, allowed me to join the French team, represent my country for 4 years and continue my progress. I am grateful to him, explains the interested party. When the club officials asked me to bring my skills and momentum to the remaining 15 games of the Top 14,it was obvious. We can face the challenge together. I urge employees, supporters and volunteers to join forces to maintain our club and ensure LOU Rugby is respected and feared. »
After a third-place finish in the regular season and a play-off place in 2022-23, LOU only finished 11th in 2023-24. A huge disappointment for the management who thought thay would take a step forward this summer by offering the services of Jono gibbes. The former coach of La Rochelle (2018-2021) and Clermont (2021-2023), 47, was recruited as a consultant by the Rhône club to support Gengenbacher. Also a member of the management of the New Zealand chiefs franchise, Gibbes was not based in Lyon and was working with the Lyon management via video conference from New Zealand.
But after eleven days, LOU, beaten on Saturday in Pau (29-15) for the seventh time this season, occupies 13th and penultimate place in the Top 14.
